ABP Food Group, the Ireland-based meat processor, has decided to end production at a plant in north-west England.

The firm is moving operations from the site in Blackburn after a review of the plant and the re-opening of a facility 60 miles south-west in Ellesmere Port.

“The company has undertaken a full collective consultation with colleagues at Blackburn, all of whom were offered alternative roles elsewhere in the company,” ABP said in a statement.

ABP has not responded to requests for comment on when the move will take place or how many staff have been affected.

The group redeveloped the entire site at Ellesmere Port in a bid to “create one of the most advanced, efficient and sustainable beef processing operations in Europe”. It spent GBP30m (US$44.8m) on the project, with the site employing over 720 staff.
