It estimates that US$59.7m in dairy products are lost annually in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, for instance. Lack of knowledge is to blame, and the FAO has been training farmers and distributors and improving use of preservation technologies.


The agency has just completed a month-long conference on the topic in Ethiopia, for farmers, agricultural agents, producers, marketers and vendors in that country, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania (and Syria). The FAO estimates for every 100 litres of milk saved, up to five jobs are created in processing and transport.
