Argentina’s biggest dairy firm La Serenisima has admitted it has held talks with French food giant Danone over a possible new business venture between the two companies.

Reports in Argentina last week claimed that Danone was in negotiations to buy  La Serenisima. The two companies have worked together since 1996, with Danone marketing La Serenisima’s yoghurts and desserts brands.

In a statement seen by just-food, La Serenisima told Argentina’s share watchdog that there was “constant dialogue” between the two sides “to evaluate markets, policies and strategies that are of common interest for both activities”.

“Within this context, we have analysed on a preliminary basis business alternatives but stress that there has been no agreement,” the company said. A spokesperson for La Serenisima refused to be drawn on the discussions.

La Serenisima, which generated annual sales of ARS2.3bn (US$608.9m) in 2008, accounts for 70% of the milk market in Buenos Aires, the Argentine capital.
