Home-delivery produce business Aussie Farmers Direct has announced plans to invest A$5.5m (US$4.6m) in a private milk factory, in an attempt to break the foreign-owned control of Australian milk.
The company plans to redevelop the former Bonlac site at Camperdown, which has been disused for 10 years, under a new Aussie Farmers Dairy label. The plant is expected to produce 100,000 litres of milk and milk products a day once full capacity is reached.

“At the heart of the company’s core values is connecting the farming community to Australian households and creating and fostering rewards and opportunities for everyone,” Aussie Farmers Direct chief executive Braeden Lord told the Weekly Times.
“With so much of Australia’s fresh milk in the hands of foreign ownership, Aussie Farmers Dairy will benefit local dairy farmers by giving them a greater choice of buyers, support local jobs and give Aussie consumers the choice of a 100% Australian-owned and produced milk.”
The milk will be distributed around Australia by Aussie Farmers Direct’s franchises and home milk delivery services, with an expected 100 new jobs over the next five years.
Aussie Farmers Direct, established in 2005, was set up to bring local produce directly to customers’ doors, reviving the old-fashioned ‘milkman’ delivery service and adding a variety of fresh produce, meats, staples and baked goods.
