The association has stated that, although it does not normally support mandatory schemes, it believes labelling is imperative for consumers purchasing beef both within Australia and overseas, the Northern Miner newspaper reported. It also proposes to fund the expenses brought about by necessary upgrading
ABA chair Linda Hewitt said: “We feel that our mandatory Cattle Transaction Levy funds should be put towards a mandatory labelling scheme, which would be a real positive for the Australian beef industry. We would support that funding from our levies be used by processors for mandatory labelling expenditure.”
In the statement, the ABA also registered its ‘absolute disillusionment’ with the Australian Cattle Council for rejecting the mandatory country of origin labelling for beef and beef products.
