Leaders of Meat Standards Australia (MSA) have been slammed for claiming that the beef grading scheme, designed to ensure consumer satisfaction and regular standards, has been sold out.

Domestic meat processors said that accusations that they were not fully committed to the MSA scheme were “preposterous”. Chairman of the National Meat Association Geoff Jureidini denied that the move to introduce company-based graders signified a lack of credibility for the current MSA protocol, which involves 40 independent graders.

The comments from MSA team leader Rod Polkinghorne came last week in response to the changes suggested by the Meat and Livestock Australia body.
