A series of clinical trials has been launched to examine the potential health benefits of whey.

A by-product of the cheese-making process, whey has potential applications in treating bowel disorders, immunity problems, leg ulcers and extreme sunburn, reported the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

A whey-based mouthwash is being tested. Dr Gordon Howard, senior scientist at Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital, commented on the mouthwash: “It’s now being applied clinically and in fact in one instance is being used in a clinical trial for the treatment of oral mucositis, which is a side effect of chemotherapy.”
