Australian grocery retailer Coles Myer has reported a 21% increase in first-quarter sales, boosted by expansion in its fuel and convenience store division.


Coles said sales were A$8.5bn (US$6.4bn) for the 13 weeks to 24 October, compared to $7.1bn in the year-ago period, reported Reuters. Same-store sales rose 5.4%.


Sales of food and liquor rose 6.6% to $4.6bn, while sales from stores open at least a year rose 4.5%.


The company’s fuel and convenience store division posted sales of $1.3bn, compared to $314m a year earlier, while same-store sales rose 20%.
