German discounter Aldi, which launched its Australian campaign at the beginning of this year, has announced plans to open in Canberra before the end of 2001. The first store will be located at Homeworld in Tuggeranong, but the group’s local leading agents are said to be seeking further sites.

The move is likely to spark further price cuts – good news for consumers but hard to swallow for Aldi’s competitors. The expansionist German group kept the Australian retail sector waiting for many months while it prepared its Antipodean offensive. Rival supermarket operators in areas where Aldi has already made inroads have been forced to slash prices, with some even selling certain goods at a loss.
