Clive Hildebrand, the head of the Sugar Research and Development Corp., is set to head an independent investigation to the state of the sugar industry.
The findings of his assessment will be presented to the federal government in the middle of the year to enable officials to establish what changes are necessary to ensure the industry’s survival.
Ian Ballantyne, CEO of the sugar industry body Canegrowers, welcomed the news.
“The industry’s been under a lot of pressure for a couple of years, and it’s not well understood in Canberra,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: “And we think this is an opportunity for some balance to be put into issues like trade issues, like our environmental sustainability, and issues like our economic sustainability in the long term.”
