Reports have appeared today (11 January) in the Australian press that Kraft plans to close its Broadmeadows biscuit plant in Melbourne.

Broadmeadows is one of two Kraft factories in Melbourne. One hundred and fifty one workers will be made redundant.

The multinational will shift production of its dry biscuit brand to a regional facility in China while Australian distribution will be contracted to a third party logistics provider, it is reported.

The move has prompted an avalanche of criticism within Australia, with unions and the media arguing that the company should reinvest in Australia, the country buying its products and supplying its profits.

Kraft was unavailable for comment at this time.
