Two McDonald’s outlets in the Australian city of Sydney were closed yesterday (Tuesday) after stores received suspicious packages containing white powder.

Following the anthrax attacks in the US, there has been a spate of hoax packages containing powder. The police have not yet confirmed whether this latest case is a hoax, as the substance is currently being investigated by forensic scientists.

As a precautionary measure, a number of employees have been treated by ambulance officers. McDonald’s restaurant managers across the country have been ordered not to open any mail until further notice.

“We are treating this matter very seriously and I want to reiterate that the safety of our customers and staff is our most important priority,” said McDonald’s Australia managing director Guy Russo.
