Many eggs producers have been forced out of the market by the pressures of low prices and high costs. This has meant that the national stock of eggs has fallen by two-thirds in the last six months, according to Jeff Ironside, president of the Australian Egg Industry Association. Shortages can only get worse, said Ironside, unless farmers are encouraged to maintain production.

Egg producers are due to visit the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission next week, in a bid to ensure the creation of a national floor price for eggs.
