An initial foray into Sunday trading in Queensland, Australia, seems to have worked largely to the benefit of grocers.
Nearly A$5m (US$2.6m) flowed into the cash tills on Sunday, and the Retailers Association of Queensland estimated that a quarter of a million consumers hit the shops. However, Queensland Retail Traders and Shopkeepers Association deputy director Randall Swain questioned the figures, accusing the RAQ of a “pure fabrication,” reported the Courier-Mail.
There is in any case little doubt that large grocers reaped the majority of the profits, with smaller retailers reporting the day as “a bit ho hum”. Sunday opening appeared to make little impact on sales of clothing, household goods and electrical items.
Convenience store operators have expressed concern that Sunday trading at supermarkets will adversely impact their turnover.
