The Victorian Farmers Federation has rejected calls for a three-year moratorium on genetically modified crops.

VFF president Paul Weller said the federation had listened to the concerns of farmers who had asked for a moratorium while more tests were carried out. However, the federation had decided it would support the release of genetically modified crops providing “appropriate protocols” were in place, reported the Herald and Weekly Times.

The grains industry has established a Gene Technology Grains Committee to draw up and oversee management protocols for the commercial release of genetically modified canola.
