Exports of Australian red meat have fallen due to the high Australian dollar and low consumer demand.

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) said total beef and veal exports fell 20% to 64,000 tonnes in August, while lamb exports fell 17% and mutton exports dropped 55%, reported Asia Pulse.

MLA said the strong value of the Australian dollar had hit exports to markets such as Korea.

Exports to Canada, meanwhile, were hit by weak consumer demand due to the discovery of a single case of mad cow disease there in May.

Exports to Australia’s most important market, Japan, slid 3% after Japan raised its tariff on beef imports.
