Australia’s Monash University expects to help grow Australian food exports to China through a tie-up with state-owned Cofco, China’s largest food maker.

Monash said the agreement with Cofco will see the university’s new food innovation centre gain access to the “technical resources” of the Chinese group’s Nutrition and Health Research Institute. The university said the tie-up would give it “in-depth” knowledge of Chinese consumers, regulatory expertise and market delivery platforms. Monash claimed the agreement could “fast-track supply opportunities for Australian exporters”.

The food innovation centre at Monash was formally opened today (10 October) by the Victorian minister for industry and employment, Wade Noonan.

The centre provides Australia’s food industry with technology and product development services including “consumer-aided design” as well as research in areas such as food chemistry, packaging design and food ethics. Monash said the centre enables businesses to “rapidly export to target markets by acquiring a deeper understanding of middle-class consumers in Asia”.

Professor Margaret Gardner, president and vice-chancellor of Monash, said the centre’s development and the agreement with Cofco agreement reflected the university’s commitment to helping Australia achieve its food export ambitions.

“The Monash food innovation centre opens at a crucial time for Australia’s efforts to boost agricultural and food productivity to meet the demands of Asia’s fast-growing middle-class,” Prof. Gardner said.
