Bangladeshi authorities have reportedly restricted the import of powdered milk produced by embattled New Zealand dairy producer Fonterra.

According to Reuters, the Bangladeshi Commerce Ministry decided to halt imports of Fonterra milk powder pending chemical tests.

The precautionary measure from Bangladesh follows a recall of whey protein, which was distributed to eight customers in various markets, including China. Fonterra found the ingredient was contaminated with a bacteria that can cause botulism.

The recall has hit international confidence in the quality of Fonterra’s products. Earlier this month Fonterra was also hit with a two-week ban on marketing and distributing its products after Sri Lankan tests claimed to show products contained the agricultural chemical DCD.

Neither the Ministry of Commerce in Bangladesh nor Fonterra were immediately available for comment.
