Barilla has launched a range of pasta in the US the Italian food group said does not need to be boiled on drained.

To cook Barilla Pronto, consumers put the pasta in a 12-inch skillet, covered with three cups of cold water over high heat until the water is absorbed, eliminating the need to boil or drain.

"Pronto is a first of its kind pasta. Pronto is an innovative, new pasta line that helps make mealtime more convenient for the busy home cook," Barilla said.

"While we were testing Pronto, consumers said convenience is most important. In various testings, we've found easy preparation factors most into consumers' selection of pasta, rice or noodles, in addition to taste and texture."

The pasta is available in five varieties – elbows, half-cut linguine, penne, half-cut spaghetti and rotin. Retailers including Wal-Mart, Kroger and Target are stocking the product.
