Barilla, the Italy-based food group, has set out investment worth EUR70m (US$78m) for one of its businesses in France.

The company is plough the cash into its Harrys bakery arm in France, with plans to expand production capacity as part of an investment programme taking the business up to 2022.

Some EUR40m will be spent on “industrial facilities and innovation”, with a further tranche of EUR20m earmarked to increase capacity on existing production lines.

The Harrys business has five plants in France, its largest market, with some output sold across the border in Belgium.

The other EUR10m will be used on Barilla’s “responsible supply chain for wheat”, set up in cooperation with French farmers “to increase their incomes and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture”, Barilla said. The company announced the establishment of the wheat supply chain last year.

Barilla said it had invested EUR180m in its French operations between 2013 and 2019, including the setting up of one of the Harrys factories in 2015 in the town of Châteauroux.
