Barilla, the Italian pasta group, is planning to expand its production plant in Amens, Iowa, with an investment of US$26.8m to add facilities, including a gluten-free production line.
“Barilla is planning an expansion project, which will include construction of storage and production facilities to add a gluten-free pasta products line to the Amens facility,” Amens City Council documents revealed.
The company expects the move will create around 23 new jobs at the site.
Assistance from the state of Iowa would include tax credits of $850,000 and the Iowa Economic Development Board is scheduled to review the proposals today (16 January).
Barilla did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
Barilla launched gluten-free pasta in the US in August 2013. At the time of the launch, the company said the products would be made in a facility in Italy dedicated to gluten-free production and then imported into the US.
