BayWa, a Germany-based business with operations in agriculture, has entered an exclusive fruit cultivation and marketing programme with the Plant & Food Research institute in New Zealand.

The project has been launched by BayWa’s subsidiary T&G Global, a New Zealand-based fruit producer, to develop new higher-yielding varieties of blueberries, which will be more resistant to “pathogens than current varieties while still retaining their size and taste”.

BayWa said in a statement the aim is to strengthen its position in the fruit arena internationally. And as part of that goal, the company is also forming a joint venture in Chile with CarSol Export, described as “one of the world’s leading berry producers”, to provide a gateway into Asia for fresh blueberries.

Through its collaboration, T&G plans to launch the first new blueberry varieties during the course of the year under its Orchard Rd brand.

“The BayWa subsidiary is thereby following its strategy of expanding the blueberry business into an internationally successful premium category that generates added value from cultivation to the shop counter – just like its existing globally successful apple business, which includes the T&G premium varieties Jazz and Envy,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, BayWa expects the joint venture with CarSol to “significantly” increase blueberry sales in Asia “early” this year.
