French retail giant Carrefour is standing firm on its plans to close 16 GB stores in Belgium.
The retailer’s local management has met trade union representatives twice this week to discuss Carrefour’s plans.
Trade unions have presented alternative plans to Carrefour in a bid to stave off the closures but the company said it would press on with the closures.
Carrefour first announced the closures back in June, blaming the cuts on heightened competition in the Belgian retail sector.
Carrefour operates 280 GB supermarkets in Belgium, along with 56 Carrefour hypermarkets.
