Belgian Minister of Agriculture Willy Borsus has signed a memorandum of agreement with Chinese authorities that could soon see an increase in the number of Belgian pork exporters to the country.

Since 2009 just two Belgian pork firms are cleared to export to China. The MoU signed by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China is aimed at increasing this number.

The memorandum will see a new inspection visit in 2015 to evaluate the Belgian system and to expand the list of companies and products.

"We can say that this signing our export potential of pork to China will increase considerably," Borsus said.

"We have seen it with the Russian embargo on some of our agricultural products: export worldwide is crucial for our producers. Present in a market like China is a real step forward. More Belgian companies will now be able to export their pork to China. The memorandum signed today is a primordial step, I hope, will be followed by other similar initiatives, particularly for beef for which there are already steps have been taken."
