Delhaize, the Belgium-based retailer, has denied reports it is considering opening stores in Bulgaria and Albania.

Reports today (20 October) have suggested the groups local Greek business Alfa-Beta had plans to make a move into the two Balkan countries, opening under the name Lion Food Stores.

A spokesperson for Delhaize told just-food: “It would certainly make sense to look at that territory but we have no concrete plans at the moment. We want to expand in the Balkans and the most logical step would be to fill a gap between Greece and Romania but that is all. We have made no plans yet.”

Earlier this year, the Belgian company expanded its operations in Romania with the acquisition of local supermarket chain La Fourmi.
