Belgium-based retailer Delhaize has admitted it is eyeing Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria for expansion.

Delhaize owns the Alfa-Beta supermarket chain in Greece and in March struck a deal to buy Serbian retailer Delta Maxi, which has given it stores across the Balkans and in Bulgaria, a region he describes as having “very little modern and organised retail”.

Speaking to just-food today (7 September), the retailer indicated its desire to expand in Greece, which is in the grip of its deepest recession in decades.

A spokesman said: “It’s no secret, Greece is doing very well for Delhaize thanks to Alfa Beta and we’re looking at full-on expansion.

The retailer said it is looking for a mixture of hypermarket and convenience stores in the region.

The spokesman added: “We are, at this moment, integrating our investment in Serbia, which is a promising region. We have a strong group behind us and that puts us in a good position to go to the market with our value leadership, which is heavily valued by customers.”
