Belgian food retailer Delhaize has announced plans to invest EUR50m (USD$71.1m) into the expansion of a distribution centre in Brussels.
A new warehouse called Fresh DC III will be built at the centre, in the suburb of Zellik, and will have a refrigerated capacity of 12,000 m² for fresh produce.
“Logistics is the core business of Delhaize Belgium, it must allow for growth and innovation in our store network. Thus, Delhaize has decided to significantly expand its distribution center in Zellik to anticipate future growth,” Michel Eeckhout, executive vice president and chief executive officer of Delhaize Belgium, said.
Construction will begin later this year and the new facility is expected to be operational in late 2013 or early 2014.
Delhaize also plans to invest up to EUR140m into the renovation and modernisation of its Flanders stores in Belgium over the next five years.
The Flemish Minister-President Kris Peeters said: “These investments in the future are further evidence of the strategic vision of Delhaize. Investment is important for the anchoring of Delhaize in Flanders, and for our economy.”
