Belgium-based retailer Delhaize plans to expand in Indonesia by opening more than 100 outlets.

In an interview with Belgium business publication Beste Belegger, Delhaize CEO Pierre-Olivier Beckers said the retailer would “accelerate” its growth in the country next year.

“Our concept works very well and we are profitable there. Thanks to the size of the country, there is enormous potential there,” Beckers said.

A spokesperson for the company said Delhaize had a “modest” presence in Indonesia with 76 stores but said the country’s 300m population and its growing economy meant there was “room for potential”.

“Economic growth is still resilient over there,” he added.

The company will focus on supermarket store formats in the country. The average surplus of these stores is about 1,000 square metres, the spokesperson said.

Last month, the retailer admitted it is eyeing Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria for expansion. Delhaize said it was looking for a mixture of hypermarket and convenience stores in Greece.
