The bank has, however, already pushed the deadline back several times at the request of three retail groups interested in the assets, sources close to the sale told Reuters.

Ahold has put up for sale its Brazilian supermarket chains Bompreco Supermercados do Nordeste and G Barbosa Comercial and its Brazilian credit card business Hipercard.

Brazilian retail Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao and French retail giant Carrefour have expressed interest in the assets, while US retail giant Wal-Mart is also believed to be interested.

Bompreco has 119 stores, while G Barbosa has 32 stores. Both chains operate in the northeast of the country.
