Discount retailer Lidl is to enter the Bulgarian market with the opening of its first stores in the country this week.

The retailer will open 14 re-branded Plus stores in 11 cities on Thursday (25 November), it confirmed to just-food today.

Regulators approved Lidl’s acquisition of the Plus business in Bulgaria from German retailer Tengelmann at the end of September. The deal saw Lidl acquire 23 Plus outlets in Bulgaria and 96 Plus stores in Romania.

Lidl said it is now working “intensively” to train new staff and integrate the infrastructure.

“In Bulgaria, Lidl is already a well established employer and investor,” the retailer told just-food. “The company pays its employees an above-average salary. To date, more than 1,000 new jobs have been created, a 38,000sq m logistics centre has been erected and several millions of euros were invested into the property and construction sector.”
