Rewe is planning to take its Penny discount business into Bulgaria, the German retailer has revealed to just-food.
The company is looking to open its first Penny outlet in the Eastern European country by the end of the year. Rewe already operates a chain of Billa supermarkets in Bulgaria.
Bulgaria would be Penny’s seventh market, including Germany. The discount chain is already present in markets including the Czech Republic, Austria and Romania.
A spokesman confirmed the plans to open Penny stores in the market but refused to comment on the planned location of the first outlet or on how many stores the retailer planned to open.
The move will follow Rewe’s decision last month to expand its business in Russia. The company acquired 13 Njam Njam supermarkets for an undisclosed sum, while it also opened its first Selgros cash-and-carry outlet near Moscow.
