Tengelmann, the German retail group, is to open a chain of Plus discount stores in Bulgaria next week, the company has told just-food.

The company, which owns a stake in US retailer A&P and owns German supermarket chain Kaiser, will open the first of seven Plus outlets in Bulgaria on 8 October.

“By the end of the year we intend to have 25 stores open. In the years to come, we will open further stores and intensify our business in Bulgaria,” a spokesperson said.

Last week, Tengelmann was forced to deny that there were immediate plans to sell its stake in A&P.

Talk of a potential sale surfaced after A&P chairman Christian Haub, a member of the family behind Tengelmann, gave an interview to a German magazine.
