Japanese snacks group Calbee has announced the identity of the first product to be made under its UK-based European arm.

Yushoi Snapea Rice Sticks is an alternative to fried crisps made using green peas, the company said. The baked snack has less than 99 calories per bag. It is free from artificial colours, flavours and MSG.

It is the first product to be made in Calbee's UK plant in Deeside, Wales. A spokesperson for Calbee said the company had yet to secure listings but added: "The brand is in discussions with all major retailers. Products will be available in the first instance from the Yushoi website."

The snacks are available in four variants: soy and balsamic vinegar; smoked salt and szechuan pepper; and sweet chilli and lemon and lightly salted.

The product is available in a range of pack formats, with recommended price points from GBP0.55 (US$0.84) to GBP1.99.

In a statement, Dave Wilson, marketing director for Calbee UK, said:"Yushoi Snapea Rice Sticks is like nothing else. Lovingly made using green peas and baked with seasonings that really play on the Japanese influence we know that we have something really special for people to try."
