Japanese food group Calbee is opening a snack plant in Mississippi.

The US$51.1m factory in Senatobia will make Snapea Crisps in a bid to build on sales of the vegetable snacks brand in the US.

The factory is expected to create 254 jobs over the next five years.

“Senatobia compliments our food manufacturing plants in California and Oregon with the central placement in the US,” said Calbee North America president Gene Jensen. “We’ve enjoyed tremendous growth, and this site will address not only our current need but the needed growth for years to come.”

A spokesperson told just-food Calbee was “proceeding” with a hunt for more factories in North America which would allow it to expand further. “Further details will be announced later,” the spokesperson added.
