US food giant Kraft Foods has begun selling Cadbury’s Dairy Milk bar as Fairtrade in Canada.

Cadbury, five months before it was acquired by Kraft, announced in August last year that it would begin selling the bar as Fairtrade in Canada, Australia and New Zealand by this summer.

The Fairtrade-certified Cadbury Dairy Milk bars are now available in stores across Canada, the firm said yesterday (20 September), and includes all Dairy Milk bars without nuts, fruit or other inclusions. This includes various sizes of the bar well as Dairy Milk Thins.

“With Fairtrade certified Cadbury Dairy Milk bars available in virtually every store from coast-to-coast, we are making Fairtrade chocolate more accessible than ever,” said John Phillipson, vice president, confectionery, Kraft Foods. “The new Fairtrade bar has the same great Cadbury Dairy Milk taste, quality and affordable price that Canadians know and love – and now it directly helps to improve the lives of others. We are very proud of that.”

With an estimated 22 million bars sold annually, the move is expected to double the amount of Fairtrade certified chocolate sold in Canada, the firm said.
