Can-Oat Milling has announced an expansion to its oat milling operation in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

The project is scheduled for completion in August of 2002, and includes the addition of flake processing equipment and packaging lines, which will increase the capacity of this finishing system by over 25 million pounds annually.

The expansion is planned to strengthen the company’s competitive position and its ability to process and supply industrial oat flake ingredients.

Company president Karl Gerrand explained: “Can-Oat has seen dramatic growth in the flake ingredient category, and we have positioned ourselves to meet the strong demand. This project will enable us to continue to provide our customers with the product.”

Mayo Schmidt, CEO of agri-business giant Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (SWP), the parent company of Can-Oat, added: “There is a growing demand for flaked oat ingredients [and] Can-Oat has a excellent reputation with US food processors.”
