Canada is to plough C$925,000 (US$901,000) to fund new product development in the country’s dairy industry.

Dave MacKenzie, a local MP, made the announcement today (20 March) on behalf of Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board.

“This project will not only lead to a more competitive dairy industry, but provide Canadian consumers with a greater variety of healthier foods, such as different varieties of cheeses,” said MacKenzie.

The project, funded in part through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s Advancing Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food (ACAAF) program, will support the development of novel dairy products, including cheese alternatives with functional food characteristics that provide additional health benefits.
