Canadian meat processor Maple Leaf Foods has introduced a new method for tracking its pork products using DNA.

Earlier this year the company adopted a DNA traceability system for its pork products that allows the company to trace its retail meat products back to the farm on which the animal originated, reported the Canadian Press.

The first products to be included in the new system will be processed at a plant in Lethbridge, Alberta next month, and most will be shipped to Japan. All the sows at the company’s hog producer suppliers in the Lethbridge area were registered as part of the system.

CEO Michael McCain said the system should be widely adopted by the Canadian meat industry to ensure traceability amid an increased consumer interest in food safety, the report said.
