Canadian frozen food retailer M&M Meat Shops has said it is working towards a potential purchase of Canadian chocolatier Laura Secord.

M&M Meat Shops, which operates more than 375 stores, said it is the lead bidder for the confectionery chain, which is currently owned by Chicago, Illinois-based Archibald Candy Corporation.

M&M Meat Shops said it is committed to strengthening and building the 90-year-old Laura Secord brand and retail network. It vowed to retain all of Laura Secord’s 1,600 Canadian employees and 160 retail shops.

“We believe Laura Secord is well positioned for continued future growth and success,” said Mac Voisin, president of M&M Meat Shops.

The company said a bidding process for the final acquisition of Laura Secord will be held within the next few weeks.
