Because trans fats are most prevalent in highly processed foods, the opposition party contends that low-income and older Canadians are particularly at risk.
If the motion passes, it would require the government to limit trans fats to no more than 2% of a product’s total fat, allowing for naturally occurring fats in products like cheese and milk. The motion was inspired by the findings of the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation and Denmark’s similar move last year. Canadians eat an average of 10g of trans fats a day – one of the highest rates in the world.
