Canadian dairy firm Saputo has said it is to close two of its 13 Canadian milk factories and sell another, following Canada’s decision to stop exporting subsidised milk to the US.
Saputo said it would close its plants in Calgary, Alberta and Armstrong, British Columbia, leading to the loss of 180 jobs.
Saupto’s packaging plant in British Columbia is to be sold to soy drinks company Soyaworld, which may keep on some of the plant’s 74 employees.
Saputo said it expects to achieve annual savings of C$6.5m (US$4.7m) by divesting the plants, reported Reuters.
