Canada-based dairy giant Saputo is to close its Fond du Lac plant in Wisconsin, US, according to union representatives.

Workers were informed yesterday (6 August) that Saputo will be stopping operations at the facility by the end of the year.

Company representatives indicated that the plant, which produces condensed milk products, would close no later than 31 December, the union reps said.

The workers’ union Local 2000 said it will open effects bargaining today on behalf of the 31 workers impacted by the closure.

“We are committed to ensuring that our members receive a lucrative exit package,” said Tom Millonzi, secretary-treasurer of Local 2000.

The union said management at Saputo have stated that declining national demand for sweetened dairy products and a desire by the company to improve efficiency as the primary reasons for the plant’s closing.

Last month, Saputo cut 40 jobs from a cheese plant in Wales.

Officials at Saputo couldnot be reached for immediate comment.
