Concerned about the vitality of your produce? SunBlush Technologies Corporation (CDNX:SBT.) has entered into an agreement with the University of Newcastle NSW, Australia to extend the life of produce and flowers through the application of Nitric Oxide (NO).

NO is a natural compound produced by fruits, vegetables and flowers. It is also the chemical in the body that is stimulated by use of the drug Viagra(TM). Using NO in the packaging of flowers, fruit and vegetables retards the ripening and ageing processes, therefore extending the shelf life of the products, and providing extended vase life of flowers – a key criterion for consumers.

The technologies have been developed by the University of Newcastle in association with Bar-Ilan University in Israel. The current range of NO application technologies resulted from collaboration between Professor Yaakov Leshem of the Bar-Ilan University and Professor Ron Wills of the University of Newcastle.

The NO application to fresh fruits and vegetables, including cut salads is currently being patented world-wide.

“This acquisition is consistent with the Company’s objectives of being the technological leader in the high growth, natural produce industry and will be a strong addition to the SunBlush technology portfolio,” said Nigel Lees, President and Chief Executive Officer. “The acquisition of new technologies and our recently announced entry into the B2B e-commerce arena for perishables with our partner FreshNet Ventures will solidify our position as the world’s leading developer and marketer of food and flower based technologies.”

“This agreement initiates a long term research and development relationship between The SunBlush Technologies Corporation and the University of Newcastle”, said Professor Ron Wills of the University of Newcastle. “We anticipate that SunBlush and our University will develop additional application for NO to include Modified Atmosphere Packaging applications. The University of Newcastle recognizes the worldwide licensing capabilities of SunBlush and regard them as strategic partners for implementing the NO and potentially other technologies”.

The association with the University of Newcastle is part of our goal to identify, evaluate, develop and commercialise natural preservation and shelf life extension technologies with the goal of creating a global licensing network for its technologies. SunBlush’s ability to add technology, key buyers, and to create a global presence are key requirements to create a successful B2B e-commerce enterprise for the fresh produce and flower business.

Part of the evaluation and commercial application with flowers will be undertaken in Israel by SBT’s affiliate company, FreshSpan Europe. “Whereas the FreshSpan technology extends shelf life and is of primary benefit to exporters of fresh cut flowers, the application of NO technology will benefit the consumer in extending the life of the flowers in the vase at home,” said Mr. Lees.

The SunBlush Technologies Corporation is the leading provider of life extension technology to the Fresh Produce and Flower Industry and uses its technological leadership to pursue licensing opportunities in the high growth, natural produce industry. The Company’s technologies naturally extend the shelf life of fresh produce, flowers, and juices, thereby enabling economic distribution of premium quality vine-ripened fruit and vegetables.
