Canada-based natural and organic food group SunOpta has recorded an increase in full-year profit on the back of growth in its grains and consumer products divisions.

In the 12 months ended 29 December, earnings amounted to C$24.2m (US$23.5m) from $5.3m last year. Excluding discontinued operations, earnings were up 42% to C$23m.

Operating income was up 39% to C$47m, primarily due to improved operating income in the firm’s grains & foods, consumer products, and Opta Minerals divisions.

Sales in the period climbed 7% to C$1.09bn. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange rates, commodity-related pricing, acquisitions and rationalised product lines, revenues were up 6% on a consolidated basis.

SunOpta said the increase was driven by strong growth within integrated packaged food product categories, the benefit of increased prices and higher volume of sales of raw grains, and higher sales within Opta Minerals due to recent acquisitions.
