Canadian dairy giant Saputo has confirmed it is in talks to sell its plant in Wales to UK firm Dairy Partners.

In February, Saputo announced it would close the facility as part of plans to quit Europe, a strategy that also involved shutting a cheese site in Germany.

However, Saputo is in talks to sell both plants. Last month, it said it was in negotiations to offload the facility in Germany to Lactalis. Speaking to just-food yesterday, a Saputo spokesperson confirmed the discussions over the Welsh plant.

“We are in advanced stages of negotiations with Dairy Partners in the UK for the sale of our Newcastle, Emlyn facility,” the spokesperson said. The plant supplies mozzarella to foodservice customers.

Asked when Saputo expected to sign deals on both sites, the spokesperson added: “We intend to finalise soon.”

When it announced plans to quite Europe, Saputo said it did not have the “critical mass” for its European operations to be profitable.
