A full 84% of respondents snack regularly and half of respondents said they eat in between meals at least once a day, the study, carried out by pollsters IPSOS, suggested.

The top healthy snack choice listed was whole grain cereal with 82% of those asked consuming such products.

However, when asked about their own snack choices of the past week, 65% listed fruit, followed by the so-called unhealthier option of crisps (48%) and candy, chocolate or cookies (39%).

The IPSOS study says more than a third claim to feel guilty when they snack, and most of it is done in the latter part of the day, with a quarter of respondents snacking just before bed.
