Unilever Canada is to close its mayonnaise and sauce manufacturing facility in Baie d’Urfé, Quebec.

The company said the closure is being made in a bid to reduce “excess manufacturing capacity in its food business”.

The closure, to be completed by the end of 2009, will result in the loss of around 110 jobs.

The majority of production at the Baie d’Urfe facility will be moved to the company’s existing facility in Rexdale, Ontario.

Unilever said the move will result in an increase in employment requirements at the Rexdale facility of about 30 positions which will be offered to employees of the Baie d’Urfe facility affected by the closure.
