Cargill is to relocate ground beef production at a plant in Nebraska, converting the site into a facility producing cooked meats, a move that will affect 80 jobs.
Ground beef production taking place at Columbus will be relocated to existing facilities at Butler, Wisconsin and in Forth Worth, Texas.

The US agribusiness giant said the changes at its factory in Columbus, Nebraska, would start in December. Cooked meat production is slated to start in the middle of next year.
"When completed, our Columbus plant will give us a variety of cooked meat processing capabilities we currently don't have, and those new capabilities will provide our customers with more options to help them grow their businesses," John Niemann, president of Cargill's turkey and cooked meats division, said.
Of the 250 positions at Columbus, approximately 80 will be impacted when the changes start in December, Cargill said. The company said it is working with those employeeson opportunities to fill open positions at its other facilities in the region. Cargill insisted it was "optimistic" each affected employee will choose to take an open position with the company at those locations.

When the Columbus cooked meats plant is fully operational in 2017, it will employ approximately the same number of people now working at the ground beef patty plant, Cargill added.
