Carrefour, the world’s second-largest retailer, is to open its first store in the Chinese province of Inner Mongolia next year.
The French retail giant told just-food today (22 January) that it was set to sign a contract for a store in the city of Hohhot.
The company is already present in 45 cities in over 20 Chinese provinces and, at the end of 2009, had 156 Carrefour hypermarkets in the country.
Carrefour grew its sales in China by 8.6% in 2009 on a constant-currency basis. However, that figure was driven by store expansion. On a like-for-like basis, sales dipped 2%.
