China is expecting its 2002/03 sugar output to be high at 9.35-9.5 million tonnes despite frost damage in the major growing areas of Guangxi and Yunnan.

China Sugar Association (CSA) official Lian Xuezhi told Reuters that China’s sugar demand in the year from October 2002 to September 2003 was likely to match domestic production of 9.5 million tonnes.

In the previous year, demand was 8.8 million tonnes and production was 8.5 million tonnes.
